PRIM&R Overview

Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research (PRIM&R) advances the highest ethical standards in the conduct of biomedical, behavioral, and social science research. We accomplish this mission through education, membership services, professional certification, and public policy initiatives.

We’ve highlighted some of PRIM&R’s most popular offerings below:

Membership

With a supportive membership community of nearly 4,000 individuals from more than 1,000 institutions located in more than 40 countries, PRIM&R membership can help you learn, grow, and connect with others furthering the advancement of ethical research.

Our members include those involved in every aspect of biomedical, behavioral, and social science research, and come from public and private institutions, the federal government, academia, and industry. PRIM&R members gain the support of a community, educational resources in the online Knowledge Center, and discounts on both PRIM&R offerings and select external events.

SBER Network

The unique issues and challenges faced by those who work in social, behavioral, and educational research (SBER)-focused ethics and oversight are increasing, and PRIM&R's SBER Network is here to help. Led by members Linda (Petree) Mayo and Cecilia Brooke Cholka, this network is open to all PRIM&R members working with SBER. Participation in the SBER Network includes access to the SBER Network online community hub where members can share ideas and information and ask questions. The Network also hosts periodic Virtual Roundtables led by one or more members of the PRIM&R community, followed by open Q&A sessions.

Research Ethics Digest and Self-Study Quiz

Research Ethics Digest is an electronic publication that delivers timely and relevant abstracts and full-text articles from scholarly journals to the inboxes of PRIM&R members every two months. The Research Ethics Digest Self-Study Program allows members to earn free CE credits for reading the articles each month and passing a short online quiz on their contents. Research Ethics Digest and the Self-Study Quiz are only available to active PRIM&R members.

Certificate Program

For those who are new to research protections and are not yet eligible to sit for the CIP exam, or those whose professional role extends beyond research ethics and oversight, PRIM&R offers a Certificate in the Foundations of Human Subjects Protections that allows you to demonstrate your commitment to growing within the field. The requirements to obtain the certificate are flexible—the AER Conference fulfills a core requirement!—and enrollment in the program is free for members.

Webinars

PRIM&R webinars are presented by experts in the field and deliver clear, comprehensive information on important topics in research ethics. In addition to upcoming live webinars, over 100 recordings of past webinars are available for purchase in PRIM&R’s online store. Members can access webinars that are more than one year old free of charge and earn the associated CE credits.

Webinar bundles can help you navigate the wealth of webinars available and coordinate what you want to watch next. Each bundle includes 5-8 high-quality, on-demand webinar recordings focused on a particular topic; individual members can access these bundles at no cost and view them at their convenience.

EROC

The Ethical Research Oversight Course (EROC) is an engaging, interactive online course that equips IRB members and HRPP/IRB staff for their roles through demonstration of the ethical principles and regulatory frameworks that govern their day-to-day work. The course explores fundamental concepts in human subjects protections, including informed consent, data and safety monitoring, IRB meeting dynamics, and more. Throughout the course, learners will observe a simulated IRB’s deliberations as they review two studies (one biomedical and one behavioral) and demonstrate how key ethical principles are applied in the IRB protocol review process. Members receive discounted EROC subscriptions.

At Your Doorstep

The At Your Doorstep program brings PRIM&R education to you, allowing you to host continuing education for your institution in an effective, economical way. Courses are taught by expert faculty and offerings can be tailored to your institution's needs. At Your Doorstep programs have been held at more than 250 institutions ranging from small regional health centers to large government agencies.

PRIM&R is now offering half-day AYD courses virtually. These programs will have the same high-quality educational content as the traditional in-person courses in a new format.
