Certified Professional in IACUC Administration logo

Are You Eligible for CPIA® Certification?

Find out whether your professional experience qualifies you to take the CPIA® exam.

Have You Worked in IACUC Administration for at least 2 Years?

If you've accumulated at least 24 months of qualifying experience within the past seven years, you may meet the CPIA® experience requirement.

Does My Experience Qualify?

Qualifying experience includes direct responsibility for IACUC administration and institutional animal care and use program oversight. You must have substantive responsibility for the development, management, implementation, oversight, and administration of the following activities:
  • IACUC protocol review process, from submission to approval
  • Semiannual program review and facility inspection processes
  • IACUC policies, procedures, and guidelines
  • Regulatory/accreditation processes (e.g., AAALAC, DOD, OLAW/PHS, USDA, VA)
  • Continuing IACUC oversight of animal activities and the investigation of animal welfare concerns and/or noncompliance
  • Support for IACUC committee functions
  • Training programs regarding IACUC functions and animal care and use regulations/guidelines
Serving as an IACUC member, veterinary professional or paraprofessional, institutional official, investigator or research staff member, or laboratory animal facility management or staff does not, by itself, meet the primary eligibility requirements.
You may still qualify if your responsibilities include substantive IACUC administration activities, such as those outlined above.

Part-Time Experience Can Count

You do not need to spend 100% of your time on IACUC administration for your experience to count. Part-time experience is calculated based on the percentage of effort devoted to qualifying IACUC administration activities.

Not Sure if Your Experience Qualifies?

We can help.

If you're unsure whether your professional experience meets the CPIA® eligibility requirements, submit your CV or résumé and work verification form for review by the CPIA® Council.
