Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research (PRIM&R) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, founded in 1974, that works to ensure the highest ethical standards in research by providing education and other professional resources to the research and research oversight community, including those who work with human subjects protections programs (HRPPs), institutional review boards (IRBs), animal care and use programs, and institutional animal care and use committees (IACUCs).
Our in-person and online programs are designed to provide both practical strategies for implementing the regulations that protect humans and animals involved in research studies and foster a deeper understanding of the ethical principles that underpin these regulations. Our two credential programs, the Certified IRB Professional (CIP®) and Certified Professional in IACUC Administration (CPIA®) credentials, formalize and document the expertise necessary for effective and appropriate research ethics support.
In addition to learning from experts, we believe that research oversight personnel can learn a lot from each other, and to that end, we seek to build a sense of community and create opportunities for that community to come together—at events and in online forums—to network, share insights, and strengthen connections. We have a membership community of approximately 4,000 individual members, and a wider audience of over 25,000 individuals from around the world, who share a commitment to the centrality of ethics to advancing science and medicine.
PRIM&R is also active in public policy, offering expert opinion and guidance to the rule-making and advisory bodies governing the research enterprise and its practical applications.
PRIM&R is governed by a Board of Directors, and operations are administered by a staff headed by an executive director.
