Collaborate, Learn, and Lead in Research Oversight

PRIM&R’s seminars offer dynamic, 90-minute activity-focused sessions designed specifically for professionals working in research oversight, including those in HRPP, IRB, IACUC, and compliance roles. These interactive learning experiences emphasize peer collaboration, practical applications, and networking, featuring a focused presentation paired with engaging group discussions. Through small-group exercises and large-group dialogue, participants explore real-world challenges and share strategies for strengthening ethical research oversight and animal care and use programs. Tailored for intermediate to advanced professionals, these sessions provide a unique opportunity to exchange insights, share strategies, and apply new knowledge in a supportive, collaborative environment.

A Comprehensive Guide of What We've Learned in the IRB Review of AI Research
Tuesday, October 28, 2025 | 1:00-2:30 PM ET
The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming the research enterprise. Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) must be equipped to understand and evaluate the risks, benefits, and implications of AI-driven studies - particularly those involving human participants. This seminar provides a foundational overview of AI concepts and their applications across diverse research settings. Participants will learn to distinguish between studies that use AI to support research aims and those that develop new AI tools—an essential distinction when assessing ethical considerations such as transparency, bias, and informed consent.

Context-Aware Ethics Review in Global Social Science
Social sciences have long been a particularly challenging area for research ethics review. Social science researchers are often concerned that ethics review does not speak to the ethical matters they face in practice, and can preclude important research. This seminar focuses on issues that raise distinctive and pronounced challenges for research ethics professionals when it comes to reviewing social science methods such as: snowball sampling or observation in private spaces; research that studies sensitive topics, such as socially ‘deviant’ activities or politically contentious topics; and research that takes place in real-world settings with the potential for immediate social or psychological impact.

Approaching AI Use in Research From a Public Trust Perspective
AI has entered daily life in research, medicine, law, and computing. But members of the public may feel confused or even fearful of the technology and its capabilities, especially if they have not yet been exposed to it. HRPP and IRB professionals who understand and approach AI with confidence can build skills that help identify study risks and strengthen understanding between researchers and participants. In this 90-minute session, we will explore how models of trust building in scientific disciplines can foster the usefulness and public understanding of these emerging technologies.
