Webinar
Founding the IRB's AI Proficiency
Recording Available
Presenters: Tamiko Eto and Benjamin Silverman
By now, many IRBs have seen the terms during their review processes that invoke research with AI. This field is growing at an astounding rate and requires continuously evolving operations and support to guide researchers. As we witness how technology evolves, we must also contemplate and provide the most understandable procedures and protection to research participants. Empower your office and board to understand more about these topics and their use in research applications. This webinar will explore real-world case studies that demonstrate how to apply key principles and skills—bridging the gap between theory and practice.
Seminars
Approaching AI Use in Research from a Public Trust Perspective
Thursday, August 7, 2025 | 1:00-2:30 PM ET
Presenter: Ianthe “Cookie” Bryant-Gawthrop, MS, CIP® | Director of Programs
AI has entered daily life in the fields of research, medicine, law, and computing. But the public can feel confused by or even fearful of the technology and its capabilities if not yet exposed to these technologies. HRPP and IRB professionals who understand and approach AI with confidence can build skills that help to identify study risks and bolster understanding between researchers and participants. In this 90-minute session, we will strive to understand how models of trust building in scientific disciplines could work to foster the usefulness and understanding of these emerging technologies.
Learning Objectives:
- Explore public perceptions of AI and relevant concerns to address in privacy, data handling, and understanding likely outgrowth in the field of AI-based research.
- Discover ways to build relationships with professionals in technical AI fields and formulate trustworthy professional partnerships.
- Evaluate reading levels and ways to communicate consent, health literacy, and mental health considerations.
A Comprehensive Guide of What We’ve Learned in the IRB Review of AI Research
Tuesday, October 28 | 1:00-2:30 PM ET
The rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI) in research presents unique challenges for Institutional Review Boards (IRBs), often leaving them without the necessary tools and knowledge to conduct thorough reviews. This introductory session will provide participants with an overview of common AI applications in research, clarify essential terminology, and offer strategies for effectively reviewing AI-related studies. Through interactive discussions, attendees will explore the implications of AI research on human subjects, including the potential impacts and ethical considerations outlined in the Belmont Report. This seminar aims to equip IRB professionals with the foundational knowledge required to navigate the evolving landscape of AI in research.
Workshop
Hands-On Core Training on Artificial Intelligence
Tuesday, December 2, 9, & 16, 2025 | 1:00-3:00 PM ET
Two Learning Labs
Presenters: LeBrit Nickerson, Tubal Yisrael
This workshop equips regulatory oversight and compliance professionals with practical tools to navigate AI's role in research administration. This interactive session will explore generative AI applications in core administrative tasks, knowledge management, and data sourcing. Participants will gain hands-on experience in evaluating AI-generated outputs, training data for compliance, and utilizing AI for data visualization. The workshop will also examine AI’s capabilities and limitations, ethical considerations, and best practices for integrating AI into daily workflows. This training provides real-world strategies to enhance efficiency and decision-making in research administration.
Learning Objectives:
- Develop effective AI prompting techniques and evaluate AI-generated outputs for accuracy and compliance.
- Identify AI applications in research administration, including data sourcing, knowledge management, and workflow optimization.
- Apply ethical AI integration strategies while recognizing AI’s limitations and policy implications.
Symposium
