IACUC Administrator Core Training
Overview
Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) Administrator Core Training Courses offer foundational training for administrative personnel who support regulatory compliance in research with nonhuman animals. Essential for anyone working in oversight of research with animals, IACUC Core Training courses are presented live in a convenient format for remote learning.
Join us in exploring the responsibilities and basic functions of IACUC administration as they occur during the calendar year and work through examples of practical implementation strategies. Course attendees will also have access to an exclusive platform on the PRIM&R Online Community for additional discussion and networking.
Participants will receive a certificate of attendance that documents up to 5 continuing education credit hours for their attendance at this workshop. Certificates of attendance are useful for obtaining CE credits from professional associations. Each association's guidelines for accepting CE credit hours (in-person or virtual) may differ. Please consult the appropriate association representative for information on if, and how many, CE credits from this PRIM&R course may be used.
Course participants who hold the Certified Professional in IACUC Administration (CPIA®) credential may apply 4 continuing education credits towards CPIA® recertification credit for each course in the IACUC Core Training.

Format
Each IACUC Core training course is offered in two 2-hour sessions that teach with a blend of didactic presentations with case studies and discussions for a practical, interactive learning experience. Opportunities for deeper learning, review, discussion, and networking with faculty and colleagues are available with the supplementary Learning Lab.

Course 1:
IACUC Fundamentals

This introductory-level course is for anyone looking for a solid foundation in the oversight of animal research, including the history of animal welfare regulations and oversight and accrediting bodies; the roles and responsibilities of the IACUC and staff members; training IACUC staff, IACUC members, and research staff; protocol review; post-approval; and how to work with others outside of the IACUC.
What Will I Learn?
- Overview of animal welfare regulations and oversight and accrediting bodies.
- Protocol review.
- Holding a full committee meeting and review of post-meeting tasks.
- Learning Lab: Discuss case studies on protocol review and FCR meeting minutes writing.
- Semiannuals & Communications.
- Setting up semiannual facility inspections.
- Conducting semiannual program review.
- Recruiting and training committee members.
- Fostering animal research transparency.
Course 2:
Essentials of IACUC Administration

This program is ideal for animal care and use program personnel who are familiar with basic IACUC functions, as well as more experienced IACUC administrators and staff. Topics covered include the key components of an IACUC program; the responsibilities of IACUC administrators; strategies for creating and maintaining a culture of compliance; and best practices to ensure that IACUC administrators and their staff provide the support necessary to develop and continually strengthen both the IACUC and the broader animal care and use program.
What Will I Learn?
- Investigating and reporting noncompliance, animal welfare concerns, and unanticipated adverse events.
- Developing a Post-approval monitoring program.
- Completing and submitting annual reports to oversight bodies.
- Learn Lab: Discuss case studies on reporting noncompliances to regulators and methods of presenting results from post-approval monitoring sessions.
