PRIM&R Issues Statement on the National Institutes of Health’s Final Scientific Integrity Policy

October 30, 2024 BOSTON – Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research (PRIM&R) issued the following statement on the Final Scientific Integrity Policy of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which is set to take effect on December 30. “This policy is a crucial step toward enhancing transparency and accountability in federal scientific research. We commend the NIH for its commitment to scientific integrity," said PRIM&R Executive Director Ivy R. Tillman, EdD, CIP. "PRIM&R believes the highest standards of scientific integrity are essential to building public trust and protecting the integrity of the scientific process, thus ensuring research outcomes are credible." The final policy, according to the NIH, “incorporates and is responsive to the principles and directives of the Presidential Memorandum on Restoring Trust in Government Through Scientific Integrity and Evidence-Based Policymaking, Protecting the Integrity of Government Science, and A Framework for Federal Scientific Integrity Policy and Practice.”  “This policy aims to ensure the integrity of all aspects of NIH scientific activities, including proposing, conducting, reviewing, managing, and communicating about science and scientific activities, and using the results of science to inform policy and program decision making,” the NIH policy states. The NIH policy states: “In fostering scientific integrity, NIH aims to ensure that (1) scientific findings are objective, credible, and readily available to the public, and (2) the development and implementation of policies and programs is transparent, accountable, and evidence-based.” “As we continue to navigate complex scientific challenges as a society, it is vital we adhere to the highest ethical standards,” Tillman said. "We look forward to seeing how this NIH policy will improve the landscape of federal research and enhance collaboration across sectors.” To read the NIH’s Final Scientific Integrity Policy, click here
