PRIM&R to Hold Workshop Focused on Artificial Intelligence in Scientific Research

BOSTON – As the development and deployment of artificial intelligence continues to move quickly, PRIM&R is continuing to gather thought leaders to consider how to ethically apply AI during scientific research. In collaboration with Drexel University, Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research (PRIM&R) will hold a virtual workshop on Wednesday, titled “Impact of Ubiquitous Digital Technologies and Evolving Societal Norms on Research Ethics.” The workshop is funded by the National Science Foundation.
The speakers will include: Mary L. Gray, PhD, a Senior Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research, Faculty Associate at Harvard University’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society, and a member of PRIM&R’s Public Policy Committee; Dr. Gray will address why the proliferation of commercial AI demands action from the research community; Desmond Upton Patton, PhD, a PRIM&R Board Member and University of Pennsylvania professor, who will discuss the promise and challenge of using AI for gun violence prevention; Barbara Barry, PhD, of the Mayo Clinic, a human-computer interaction (HCI) researcher who studies how interaction with artificial intelligence impacts human intelligence, communication, and behavior, who will address ethical issues in AI-enabled clinical decision support systems; Joshua August Skorburg, PhD, Assistant Professor of Philosophy University of Guelph and Co-Academic Director of the Centre for Advancing Responsible and Ethical Artificial Intelligence, who will address whether AI is compatible with participatory research; Jonathan Beever, PhD, Associate Professor of Ethics and Digital Culture at the University of Central Florida and Director and Co-Founder of UCF Center for Ethics, who will focus on the ethical risks of bad actors in digital policymaking and the potential impacts on research; and Jonathan Herington, PhD, Assistant Professor of Philosophy, and Health Humanities and Bioethics at the University of Rochester who will outline the ethical imperative and challenges of working with diverse populations in digital research.
