A Regional Conference With a Growing Reach
For more than a decade, the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Human Research Protection Office has convened the research community for a day of practical, applicable education on research ethics, oversight, policy, and compliance.
Following the PRIM&R-supported expansion in 2025 to include animal research, biosafety, and radiation safety, Research University 2026 continues its broader research-enterprise focus. This year’s conference will examine timely and complex questions related to artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies across the research landscape.
The program creates a platform for meaningful dialogue among compliance professionals, researchers, students, community partners, institutional leaders, and members of the public. Together, participants will explore practical strategies for strengthening ethical research practices, improving regulatory understanding, and building trust across diverse research communities.

THEME AND LEARNING FOCUS
Ethical Foundations in an Artificial LandscapeArtificial intelligence and other emerging technologies are changing how research is designed, conducted, reviewed, communicated, and understood. These developments create new opportunities—but also new ethical, regulatory, and operational questions for institutions and the communities they serve.
Research University 2026 will examine how research organizations can respond thoughtfully and responsibly. Sessions will address ethical research practices, regulatory and compliance considerations, public trust, community engagement, and practical strategies attendees can apply in their professional settings.
The broader program may also explore complex issues that shape trust in science and research, including vaccine hesitancy and tribal nations’ sovereignty in the research landscape.
