PRIM&R Regional Research Ethics Program

Overview

Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research (PRIM&R) invites eligible organizations to apply to host a PRIM&R Regional Program—in-person regional conferences focused on advancing ethical research practices across human subjects research and animal care and use.
PRIM&R Regional Programs are collaborative, co-developed educational events that reflect PRIM&R’s mission to advance the highest ethical standards in research and medicine. Events should be inclusive, accessible, and responsive to regional needs.
The current model of the PRIM&R Regional Program consists of two educational activities:
  • A 1-day interactive training workshop provided by PRIM&R focused on ethical concerns and regulatory issues
  • A 1-day conference covering various topics relevant to the research ecosystem at large, including the public.
Programming is designed to serve a broad research oversight audience, including IRB and IACUC professionals, investigators, compliance staff, institutional leaders, veterinarians, and researchers. Events must include a component that engages the local community in research ethics discussions. Host institutions will assist with event and agenda development, coordination, financial management, and meeting logistics in conjunction with PRIM&R staff. PRIM&R encourages engagement from multiple institutions within a region to maximize impact. PRIM&R and host institutions can charge registration fees to recover costs associated with the events, if necessary. PRIM&R will provide a co-hosting financial contribution to support the event. These programs are intended to be CIP- and CPIA-eligible, consistent with PRIM&R’s longstanding role as a trusted provider of gold standard research ethics education.

Purpose of the Regional Program

PRIM&R’s Regional Research Ethics Program aims to:
  • Provide gold standard, accessible education on research ethics, human subjects protection, and animal care and use
  • Engage regional research communities, including IRB/IACUC professionals, investigators, administrators, ethicists, researchers, and the public
  • Address emerging ethical, regulatory, and operational challenges in research
  • Foster collaboration, networking, and knowledge-sharing across regional institutions and disciplines

Dates
PRIM&R is aiming to host the Research Ethics Regional Program in 2026, 2027, and/or 2028. Specific dates will be delineated by the steering committee, consisting of PRIM&R staff and institutional leaders from the hosting organization.
Eligibility
Eligible applicants include, but are not limited to:
  • Colleges and university
  • Academic medical centers
  • Research institutions and hospitals
  • Professional associations or consortia
  • Nonprofit organizations with a demonstrated commitment to research ethics
Applicants must demonstrate the capacity to host a regional, in-person conference and a commitment to PRIM&R’s mission and values.
Selection and Priority Considerations
Applications will be reviewed holistically. While all eligible organizations are encouraged to
  • Serve communities with distinct or niche strengths, expertise, or emerging challenges in research ethics or research oversight
  • Highlight unique regional topics or practice environments relevant to IRB and/or IACUC communities
  • Are located in geographic areas not historically served by PRIM&R in-person programs, in order to broaden access and reach
  • Demonstrate strong potential to engage a diverse, multidisciplinary audience
These priorities are intended to support geographic and topical diversity across PRIM&R Regional Programs. All complete applications will be considered, regardless of location or prior PRIM&R engagement.
PRIM&R Responsibilities Include:
  • Provide a one-day training workshop on a select topic
  • Provide strategic guidance and steering committee members to assist with conference scope, learning objectives, and alignment with PRIM&R educational priorities
  • Collaborate on agenda development to ensure relevant content
  • Support speaker identification and session design
  • Manage continuing education eligibility documentation and evaluation requirements
  • Provide branding support and promote the program through PRIM&R communication channels
  • Provide a co-hosting financial contribution to support the event
  • Support post-program evaluation and continuous improvement
Host Organization Responsibilities Include:
  • Serve as the primary local organizer and logistical lead (booking space, communicating with local presenters)
  • Provide an appropriate in-person meeting space
  • Coordinate on-site logistics (e.g., audiovisual needs, accessibility, registration support)
  • Assist with identifying regional speakers and topic priorities
  • Promote the program within local and regional networks
  • Designate a primary point of contact for coordination with PRIM&R
Costs associated with PRIM&R Regional Programs will be shared between PRIM&R and the host organization(s), with specific responsibilities outlined by the steering committee during the planning process.
