Overview

Navigating the complexities of a Human Research Protection Program or Animal Care and Use program requires a diverse set of skills, including regulatory knowledge, teamwork, and communication. This hands-on webinar will explore the unique challenges and responsibilities faced by HRPP and ACU directors, emphasizing that leadership is an ongoing learning process. Participants will engage in interactive activities designed to deepen their understanding of effectively transitioning into leadership roles and the importance of routine assessments and course corrections. Attendees will share experiences, discuss effective strategies for bridging these gaps, and assess current leadership practices.

What Will I Learn?

After attending the workshop, attendees will be able to:
  • Recognize how to assess skill and knowledge gaps when transitioning into HRPP or ACU leadership roles.
  • Examine the effectiveness of current leadership practices in HRPP or ACU programs and develop a systematic approach for continuous improvement.
  • Learn strategies for ongoing personal and professional development as a leader in research oversight.

CE Credit

Participants will receive a certificate of attendance that documents up to 1.5 continuing education credit hours for their attendance at this workshop. Certificates of attendance are useful for obtaining CE credits from professional associations. Each association's guidelines for accepting CE credit hours (in-person or virtual) may differ. Please consult the appropriate association representative for information on if, and how many, CE credits from this PRIM&R workshop may be used. This program is not eligible for CIP®️/CPIA®️ recertification by continuing education credit.

Sally Thompson-Iritani, DVM, PhD, CPIA, CCFP, CHABP, CFE

Assistant Vice Provost for Animal Care, Outreach, and the 3Rs, University of Washington’s Office of Research
Sally Thompson-Iritani, DVM/PhD, is the Assistant Vice Provost for Animal Care, Outreach, and the 3Rs at the University of Washington’s Office of Research, where she promotes a culture of care through 3Rs principles (Replacement, Reduction, Refinement), outreach initiatives, and the Dare to Care (D2C) program. With experience in industry and academia as a laboratory animal veterinarian, IACUC administrator, and preclinical researcher, she is certified in IACUC administration and compassion fatigue. At UW, she leads initiatives supporting personnel working with research animals, embedding the 3Rs into institutional culture. Nationally, she serves as President of the 3Rs Collaborative, Chair of the BAHSCR Roundtable, Vice-Chair of USARO, and a board member of SCAW, SACATM, WSVMA, and the Feral Cat Spay and Neuter Project. She is also a recipient of the Charles River Prize for 3Rs support, recognizing her contributions to advancing ethical practices and animal welfare in research. Her leadership fosters ethical practices and a culture of care across UW and the broader research community.

Edith Paal, MSJourn, MPH, CIP, CHRC

Senior IRB Director HRPP, University of Arkansas
Edith Paal, MSJourn, MPH, has been involved in the human research protection program at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences for more than 20 years. She spent 9 years in the research compliance office, where she helped develop research education programs and worked to improve communications between the compliance office and the research community. She has been with the IRB office since 2012. Early in her IRB tenure, she helped develop and implement a robust prereview process to facilitate IRB approvals. In her current role as director, a position she has held since 2019, she continues to focus on collaborating with the research community to support human subject research while maintaining human subject protections. She has been a presenter at the annual PRIM&R and AAHRPP conferences and is also an AAHRPP site visitor.
