The AI Ethics and Governance Initiative is PRIM&R's commitment to helping the research oversight community navigate the ethical, regulatory, and practical implications of artificial intelligence. Through education, peer learning, and professional development, the initiative equips individuals and institutions with the knowledge, resources, and connections needed to responsibly govern AI across the research enterprise. For more than 50 years, PRIM&R has convened research oversight professionals to address emerging ethical challenges. As AI rapidly transforms research, the initiative builds on that legacy by creating trusted spaces for learning, dialogue, and practical skill-building. From a free public podcast to invitation-only leadership roundtables, conference programming, and hands-on workshops, the initiative connects professionals at every career stage with the expertise and community they need to lead with confidence. As AI continues to evolve, so will the initiative. PRIM&R will continue expanding this portfolio of educational programs, community conversations, and practical resources to help the research oversight community address new opportunities and emerging challenges. The AI Governance Roundtables will culminate in an in-person AI Salon at the 2026 PRIM&R Annual Conference. Cohort members attending the conference will have an opportunity to continue the conversations begun during the virtual roundtables, exchange insights from their institutions, and reflect on emerging approaches to AI governance across the research enterprise. This facilitated gathering will deepen peer connections and provide space to explore shared challenges, practical strategies, and priorities for the field.

Why PRIM&R?

For more than 50 years, PRIM&R has convened research oversight professionals to address emerging ethical, regulatory, and operational challenges. As artificial intelligence reshapes the research enterprise, PRIM&R continues that role by providing independent education, practical resources, and opportunities for peer learning across the research oversight community. Today, research oversight professionals are being asked to make consequential decisions about AI governance—often without established frameworks, shared best practices, or opportunities to learn from peers. The AI Ethics and Governance Initiative creates a trusted forum for the community to explore emerging issues, exchange practical strategies, and build the knowledge and confidence needed to lead responsibly in an AI-enabled future.
