Scholarships

PRIM&R offers two scholarship programs to assist individuals with the costs associated with attending AER.

ICB Scholarship Program

Many small, underfunded institutions of higher education in the United States need, but do not have, fully functioning HRPPs/IRBs. Many of these institutions serve primarily minority populations with educational disparities, such as Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs), and Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs). Others are health institutions serving minority populations with significant health disparities, such as community clinics, regional or area Indian Health Boards, and tribal governments. Almost all such institutions have significantly fewer resources than their larger peer institutions, and many of these institutions are being asked to take on greater roles in research by participating in studies and/or initiating their own research activities.

Who can apply?

Teams of two HRPP/IRB staff members and/or IRB members who work at institutions in the United States that are federally-designated HBCUs, HSIs, or TCUs, or other institutions that serve minority populations with significant health disparities, such as community clinics, regional/area Indian Health Boards, and tribal governments, are eligible to apply for the ICB Scholarship.

This scholarship provides the following for each team member:

  • A fee waiver for all three weeks of AER20 (December 1-2, December 8-9, and December 15-16)
  • A one-year PRIM&R membership

Individuals who have received an ICB scholarship in the past are ineligible. Completed applications must be received by 5:00 PM ET on October 23, 2020. Decisions will be sent by October 30, 2020.

General Scholarship Program

PRIM&R is committed to providing those working in research review and oversight who may not have access to professional development funds the opportunity to attend this event. We will therefore offer a limited number of General Scholarship to assist individuals who would otherwise be unable to attend AER20 because of budget constraints at their institutions. A certain percentage of general scholarships will be earmarked for individuals from Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs), and who have significantly fewer resources than HRPPs in the United States.

Who can apply?

Anyone working in the field of human subjects protections can apply for this scholarship. Applicants will need to explain  what they do within the field of human subjects protections or research oversight; why they need/want a scholarship, including details about how their financial situation precludes them from registering; how they will use/disseminate the knowledge gained from the meeting; and how they think the conference can assist with their professional work and growth.

This scholarship includes a full fee waiver to all three weeks of AER20 (December 1-2, December 8-9, and December 15-16).

Individuals who have received a general or global scholarship in the past are ineligible. Completed applications must be received by 5:00 PM ET on October 23, 2020. Decisions will be sent by October 30, 2020.
