Certification and COVID-19 Updates

COVID-19 Situation

The unprecedented challenges associated with the COVID-19 outbreak have impacted some certification-related deadlines and guidelines. This page will be updated as developments unfold.

Fall 2020 Exam: Live Remote Online Proctoring Option Now Operating

PRIM&R’s certification exams are now administered through live remote online proctoring and at physical testing sites around the world. Eligible exam candidates receive an Eligibility Notice email that outlines instructions on selecting an exam delivery method and making an exam appointment.

Live remote online proctoring allows candidates to take their exams using a personal computer. Information about live remote online proctoring, including technical specs, can be found here. Exam candidates still have the option to test in-person, at a brick-and-mortar testing center.

PSI’s testing centers are operating in accordance with local ordinances, and with strict social distancing and cleaning measures in place. Information regarding PSI’s operations and policies can be found here.

Because these measures are resulting in fewer seats per exam time slot and fewer time slots overall, we have expanded the testing windows from two weeks to one month.

The revised schedule for fall 2020 certification testing is below:

Program Application Deadline Testing Window
CIP August 14 September 7 – October 7
CPIA September 4 October 5 – November 5

Grace Period Reminder

Please note that a six-month grace period follows each certification term; candidates may recertify during this time without their credential lapsing.

Cohort Certification Term End Date Grace Period Extension
Spring 2020 June 30, 2020 December 31, 2020
Fall 2020 December 31, 2020 June 30, 2021

Recertification by Continuing Education

COVID-19 has impacted the ability for candidates to earn credit hours towards recertification through continuing education. In recognition of this situation, the CIP and CPIA Councils have made the below adjustments to their 2020 recertification by continuing education guidelines.

Fall 2020 CIP Exam Recertification by Continuing Education

The fall 2020 deadline for recertification education for the CIP program has been extended to December 21, 2020. Please note that candidates’ credentials will be valid during the application review process.

2020 CPIA Recertification by Continuing Education Guidelines

For 2020, the CPIA Council has lifted the credit restriction for Category 2: Online Training and Webinars. This allows recertification candidates to earn all their credit hours by participating in eligible webinars, online courses, and virtual meetings. Candidates must still earn 50 eligible continuing education hours in order to recertify; credit limits for other recertification by continuing education categories remain in place.

Please contact the PRIM&R office if you have questions about these revised policies, or if you have encountered extenuating circumstances that impact your certification status.
