Animal Care and Use Program
An Animal Care and Use (ACU) Program is the area within an organization responsible for ensuring the ethical and humane treatment of animals used in research. The central component of the program is the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), who reviews, approves, and monitors research involving animals. This collective review ensures the research meets ethical standards and complies with regulations.
Through personnel training, environmental enrichment, monitoring, and compliance, a ACU Program strives to balance the necessity of using animals in research with their ethical and humane treatment, ensuring that their welfare is always prioritized. PRIM&R provides a professional home for those working in this field through certification, membership, year-long programming and regional and annual conferences.
